How to Prevent Competitors from Placing Ads on Your YouTube Videos

Step 1: Disable Monetization for Your Videos

  1. Log in to YouTube Studio:
    • Go to YouTube Studio (https://studio.youtube.com) and log in to your account.
  2. Access Monetization Settings:
    • In the left-hand menu, click on Content.
    • Select the video(s) you want to manage.
  3. Edit Monetization:
    • For each video, click on the pencil icon (Edit).
    • Navigate to the Monetization tab.
    • Select Off to disable ads entirely for the video.
    • Save changes.
  4. Batch Edit (Optional):
    • To disable monetization for multiple videos, use the checkboxes next to the videos, click Edit, then select Monetization, and choose Off.
Disabling monetization ensures YouTube won't run ads on your videos, including competitor ads.

Step 2: Use a Creative Commons or Non-Monetizable License

  1. Set Licensing Options:
    • When uploading your video, select the licensing type under Advanced Settings.
    • Choose Creative Commons Attribution or restrict to Standard YouTube License.
  2. Avoid Content ID Claims:
    • Make sure your content isn’t flagged by third-party content owners, which could open up monetization opportunities for others.

Step 3: Use Copyright Protection

  1. File Copyright Claims:
    • If someone uses your video without permission, use YouTube’s Copyright Management Tool.
    • Navigate to YouTube Copyright Portal (https://www.youtube.com/copyright).
    • Report any unauthorized use of your content.
  2. Enable Content ID:
    • If eligible, sign up for YouTube's Content ID system to detect and control how your videos are used by others.
    • This ensures you can block unauthorized monetization.

Step 4: Block Certain Advertisers

  1. Sign in to Google AdSense:
    • Go to Google AdSense linked to your YouTube channel.
  2. Block Specific Advertisers:
    • Under Blocking Controls, go to Content.
    • Add your competitors’ URLs or advertiser IDs to block them from bidding on ads on your channel.
Note: This step applies to monetized videos but prevents competitors’ ads from appearing.

Step 5: Restrict Embedding of Videos

  1. Go to Video Settings:
    • In YouTube Studio, select the video and click Edit.
  2. Restrict Embedding:
    • Under Advanced Settings, uncheck Allow embedding.
    • Save changes.
This prevents others from embedding your videos on external sites where they might monetize through ads.

Step 6: Use Legal Channels to Enforce Content Usage

  1. Monitor Video Use:
    • Regularly check where your videos are being used online.
    • Use tools like reverse video search to find unauthorized copies.
  2. Send Cease and Desist Notices:
    • If a competitor uses your videos or assets, send a formal legal notice to stop the misuse.
  3. File DMCA Complaints:
    • Use YouTube’s platform to submit a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown request.

Step 7: Review Channel Settings Regularly

  1. Monitor Activity:
    • Regularly review analytics to ensure no unexpected ads are appearing on your videos.
  2. Update Permissions:
    • Keep third-party access to your channel restricted. Check collaborators or managers to avoid unauthorized changes.
  3. Enable 2-Step Verification:
    • Protect your account with 2-step verification to prevent unauthorized access.

By disabling monetization, monitoring rights, and taking proactive copyright actions, you can prevent competitors or unauthorized entities from running ads on your videos.
